Know what you want and need, or you may not get to buy a Nissan Leaf

Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Nissan Nissan Leaf - Click above for high-res image gallery Are you willing to argue with your friendly neighborhood Nissan dealer over the right to get yourself a Leaf? You might have to. Anyone who has gone through the Leaf reservation process this past week noticed a few screens that weren't exactly germane to determine which model - SL or SV trim - one was ordering. How far do you drive a day?, for example. Answers to these questions were not used to weed out potential buyers just yet, that might be a job for Nissan dealers. Carlos Tavares, Nissan's chairman of the Americas, told Automotive News : We may tell the customer, 'Look, you'd be better off buying an Altima or a Sentra because your driving patterns are not ideal for this car. ... We want to be transparent. It is fundamental for us to tell the customer what the car can deliver . That's a good strategy to take, given the fair bit of confusion that still - yes, still - exists ab

Electric cars can't stay silent forever, noise is coming soon

Image
We can already picture all the NVH engineers huddled in some back corner crying together. After all, they just find out that the duties they held of eliminating noises from cars for decades are about to be crushed by a new safety guideline that will put noise back into electric and hybrid vehicles. Automakers, along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and advocates for the blind, have come to the conclusion that electric and hybrid cars need to make some noise as they motor whiz on down the road. Though an initial agreement has been reached, it could take up to three years to be finalized and become law, but that's politics for ya, eh? However, some of the proposed changes could wind up in the Motor Safety Act of 2010 if standards are agreed upon soon. Here's an overview of the suggestions in the proposal. The NHTSA would create a standard for minimum/maximum levels of sound when a vehicle is operating in low-speed situations. The sounds cannot be

Infiniti Hybrid models bet on electric powertrains

Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Infiniti , Green Daily Infiniti M35h - Click above for high-res We've already revealed Infiniti 's plans to offer the M35h hybrid early next year and a performance-oriented electric vehicle (EV) in 2013, but if a report from Autocar pans out to be true, then we'd expect to see the luxury automaker launch a slew of additional hybrids and battery-powered vehicles by the end of the decade. In fact, the report suggests that up to 90 percent of future Inifiniti models will feature either hybrid or pure electric powertrains. According to the report, the upcoming Infiniti EV is part of the company's far-reaching "CO2 strategy." The automaker apparently plans for hybrid and EVs to account for the vast majority of its sales within the next ten years. Though specific details weren't revealed, Autocar estimates that Infiniti's future lineup will be bolstered by hybrids, a powertrain that may reside in up to 70 percent of the

Sing it! VW details the all-electric Golf Blue-e-motion

Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Volkswagen Volkswagen Golf Blue-e-motion - Click above Have you heard? Volkswagen is working on an electric car. The company hasn't exactly been secretive about the plug-in work it is doing , especially with Tesla Motors co-founder Martin Eberhard on board . The German automaker is working on a few plug-in vehicles like the eGolf compact and the eUp! city car . Today, VW released another torrent of information about the eGolf - excuse us, the "Golf Blue-e-motion" (yes, a blue emotion does sound like something they'd sing about on Sesame Street) - in time for a media event in Germany. In May, VW gave its first big update on the e-Golf . VW plans to bring electric vehicles to market in 2013, squarely in the second-wave modern electric vehicle category, with the Golf Blue-e-motion now scheduled for 2014 (earlier, VW said the e Golf would come out in 2013 ). A 500-vehicle test fleet, though, will start running next year. The electric Golf is

Dacia Pitești, Romania vs Dacia Morocco

video - documentary Car production in Dacia Renault Morocco see the original Romanian blog post:  Dacia Renault Pitesti vs Renault Maroc Dacia is one of the most popular cars in low market in Europe and worldwide. The brand was developed in communist Romania, in the years 1960-1980, in a parteneriat with French producer Renault. In the 2000s, the plants in Romania were bought by the French manufacturer, including the Dacia brand. A subsequent company, Group Dacia Renault, was established, with production units in Romania - at Pitesti, Mioveni - the main plant, Titu, Oarja and Bucharest. Also, the Dacia brand, with new models designed by Renault for low market, has becoming an important global player. Relaunched in 2004 with the Logan model, Dacia has become a well-known player in the European car market. In addition to Mioveni, the Duster model is currently assembled in six other countries: Maroc, Brazil, Colombia, Russia, India and Indonesia.

Epic EV to supply Electric DeLorean with composite bodies

Image
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Lightweight , USA The arrangement that has Epic EV supplying the drivetrain for the DMC Electric DeLorean has apparently been working out so well that the two companies have decided to tap yet another of Epic's areas of expertise: composites. Weight management is an important aspect of electric vehicle design and it was realized that DMC could shave 200 pounds off their retro-futuristic product by replacing the old-school fiberglass material that makes up the main part of the chassis with a modern lightweight resin-infused composite. Not only that, but the new stuff is much stronger, which gives the Electric DeLorean better roof crush and side impact protection. Epic, of course, has been using composites in its boats for some time and CEO Chris Anthony learned much about using it in automotive applications while creating the now-dead Aptera (sniff) . While we look forward to seeing more of the modern Electric DeLorean in action, we also can't help w
