The lane in King's Lynn, Norfolk, was opened by Norfolk County Council earlier this month but has faced criticism because drivers need specialist training to negotiate an extremely narrow corner. Buses have been forced to slow to walking pace to traverse a challenging pinch point on the route - which runs between Wisbech Road and Boal Street in King's Lynn. The route was officially opened on 14 March by West Norfolk Mayor Zipha Christopher, but has been branded "unfit for purpose" by locals. Speaking to Lynn News, Brian Lake, 63, who cycles the route every morning, witnessed the unveiling ceremony. Via Yahoo! rss_cars : Car News | Motoring News - Yahoo! Shell gets approval to drill in Gulf of Mexico

Image
Filed under: Etc. , Legislation and Policy , USA It's near impossible to forget that back in April of 2010, the Deepwater Horizon burst into flames, sunk into the sea and spewed oil for months . In early May, President Obama declared that no additional deepwater drilling efforts would commence until measures were in place to prevent this type of disaster. Then, in October of 2010, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, announced that deepwater drilling would resume . Earlier this month, Salazar said that he expects to sign off on a "significant" number of offshore drilling permits. Guess what? Deepwater drilling is officially set to begin again.

German OEMs pick one electrical charging connector to rule them all

Image
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Audi , BMW , Mercedes Benz , MINI , Porsche , SMART , Volkswagen , Legislation and Policy , Europe/EU , Daimler One massive sticking point with electric cars is the lack of standards when it comes to plugging in the vehicle. In the 90s, the General Motors EV1 didn't use the same kind of plug as the Toyota RAV4 EV , and that meant electric vehicle charging stations had to keep multiple adapters on hand if they wanted to service to multiple machinery. If there's any hope that EVs will take off in popularity over the next few decades, some standardization is in order. To that end, German manufacturers Audi , BMW , Daimler ( Mercedes-Benz and Smart ), Porsche and Volkswagen have banded together banded together in support of a modular connector system for electric vehicle charging. The consortium's connector system has been submitted for standardization under the designation IEC 62196-2 Type 2 for single- and three-phase charging with alternating c...

Overweight and overfueled - fat America uses more gas

Image
According to the study, an estimated one billion gallons of extra fuel were used up to compensate for the added weight of drivers and passengers from 1960 to 2002. If you look at it another way, 0.7 percent of all the fuel burned in vehicles from 1960 to 2002 was due to passengers who have packed on a few extra pounds. Or, how about this one: 39 million gallons of fuel are burned for each pound gained by the average American. While these numbers will probably make an eco-conscious driver think twice next time they're in line at a fast food joint, it seems unlikely that the majority Americans will slim down for the simple sake of saving fuel. Nissan 1st training center 4 electric vehicles

Image
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Nissan , Green Daily "I wouldn't touch that thing with a ten-foot pole!" That's the statement we often hear when it comes to working on potentially dangerous electric vehicles (EVs). This anti-EV sentiment can be heard from shadetree mechanics and old-timers who aren't specifically trained to work on the high voltage, amped-up inner workings of EVs - or first responders who know the dangers to the inexperienced - but we often hear similar ramblings from trained automotive technicians. Nissan aims to put the myths of danger associated with working on EVs like the Leaf to rest by training technicians at its newly opened technical center in Livermore, CA.

The Inconvenient Truth about Electric Cars

Image
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Green Daily Nissan Leaf dash display - Click above for high-res image gallery Here's a discussion we've had many times before. Let's say that you assess your driving habits and are convinced that an electric car with a range of 100 miles is perfectly suited to you. So you head on down to a dealership, buy that electric car and go about your business. A month or two of time passes and you begin to realize that the hundred miles of claimed range is more like 70 miles. Well, it turns out that 70 miles doesn't quite cut it for you. Disgusted, you demand a refund for your purchase and vow to never buy an electric car again.
